Silanized slides

Silicate glass surfaces have negative charged groups. Coating with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APES) leads to a positively charged glass surface. The coating process with APES leads to the formation of a covalent bond between the glass surface and the silane. The protonated amine groups align themselves in the free space and make positive docking sites for the abundant negatively charged groups (sialic acids, carboxyl, sulphate ester groups) of the tissue.[1] The adhesion is also given in very acidic media, therefore bonds of the silane to the glass will remain.

In alkaline media, the adhesion of the tissue is less, since the number of positively charged anchor points is reduced.[2]

Such modified surfaces do not cause background staining, no autofluorescence and birefringence will appear.
